Rules

General Rules

  • Course Marshals have the ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove a participant from the race if the participant has violated the rules of the race.
  • Medical personnel have the ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove a participant from the race if the participant is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without sustaining severe physical damage.
  • No participant may use alcohol, drugs, stimulants, depressants or other substances that will improve performance, eliminate the sense of fatigue, or for any other purpose.
  • Cutting the course will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Competing under an assumed or other name will also result in disqualification.
  • Good sportsmanlike conduct will be expected of all participants.
  • All participants must enter with the intention of completing the whole race.  Should you decide to drop out of the race you MUST notify an official as soon as possible.
  • Failure to comply with the rules will disqualify participant form this triathlon.
  • Wear CSA approved cycling helmet and have a chin strap, buckled at all times. Your helmet must be worn prior to taking your bike off the bike rack, and taken off only when you place your bike back on the bike racks.
  • It is the participant’s responsibility to know the course route.
  • Athletes under 18 years of age must have race waiver signed by their legal guardian.
  • Rules, information and course maps will be provided in race kits.

 

SPRINT TRIATHLON RULES

The Triathlon 750 m Swim

  • The swim will consist of two laps of a 375m loop.  Swimmers must keep the buoy markers to their right at all times.  After the first lap, the swimmer will be required to exit the water and run a short distance on the beach around a marker and then proceed into the water for the second lap.
  • Each swimmer must wear the swim cap provided by the race.  A second swim cap may be worn underneath if desired.
  • No fins, paddles or aid of any kind will be allowed.
  • Swim goggles or face masks may be worn.
  • Wet suits are allowed.
  • No individual paddlers or escorts allowed.  Course will be adequately patrolled by safety vessels and lifeguards.
  • Swimmers (solo athletes) will be required to have race officials mark race numbers on their shoulders and left calf. 
  • Assistance during the swim will be permitted in the form of stopping to rest so long as no forward motion is taken with assistance.  Using assistance to propel the athlete forward will result in immediate disqualification.

 

The Triathlon 20 km Bike

  • The bike course will leave the transition zone down Lakeshore Road on to Brunette Road, cross Algonquin continuing on Park Road/Brunet Road, then on Railway Street to Moneta Avenue.  Turn East on Moneta Ave./Goldmine Road past Delnite Road, over McDonald Hill and continue east towards the DOME Mine where participants will turn around and return westerly back to Railway Street. Railway becomes Brunette.  Follow Brunette Road back towards Gillies Lake, up Lakeshore to transition.  Map of the course will be posted on race day.  Please obey the Rules of the Road. Use Caution at all intersections. Use caution in front of Hollinger Golf Course on Moneta due to vehicles turning into the Golf Course.
  • Absolutely NO DRAFTING of another bike or any other vehicle is allowed.  This is an individual endurance event.  Teamwork which provides you with an advantage over another competitor is not allowed.  A space of at least TWO BIKE LENGTHS must be left between riders.  You may enter this space only to pass the leading rider.  If you cannot pass you must drop back.  Following a vehicle closer than FOUR (4) bike lengths is drafting.  Riding side by side in a cross wind is also drafting.  Each participant must wear a race number (on back) at all times while on course. 
  • Protective head-gear (hardshells only) is required during the entire bike race.  Any infraction will result in disqualification and competitor will be pulled off the course.  Helmets must remain on and secured as soon as bike leaves the bike rack and until bike is returned to the bike rack.
  • Bikers must walk or run their bikes while in transition zone until the designated line is crossed where they mount their bikes. The same follows for dismounting at the end of the bike before entering transition zone, and walking bike to the rack.
  • No individual support people, vehicles or bikers allowed.  Bikers should carry their fluid requirements with them.
  • Each participant will be individually responsible for repair and maintenance of own bike.  Biker must be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction .
  • Bikers are expected to heed direction and instructions of all race officials
  • Participant may walk bike if necessary.
  • Bikers are individually responsible for following traffic laws and are solely responsible for the consequences of infractions.
  • The roads will NOT BE CLOSED TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC.  Therefore please ensure to ride WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE STREET
  • Be alert for vehicles sharing the road and use good judgment when turning and passing other bikers. 
  • Police and volunteer assistance will be positioned at intersections to control the flow of traffic, but continue to stay alert to other vehicles – it is ultimately up to you to follow the rules of the road.
  • The bike course will be closed three (3) hours after the start of the race.  Bikers still on the course after that time will be required to withdraw from the race.

 

The Triathlon 5 km Run
           

  • Run will consist of 2 loop around the lake of the Gilles lake trail, with the finish at Gillies Lake Beach near the transition area.  The run will begin from the transition zone. Head out to Toke St., go right to Howard, merge Right on Howard and take a quick right on the first path back to Gillies Lake trail. Go by the Beach onto the Boardwalk. Go around Gillies Lake twice in a counter-clockwise direction. Finish line is on the Beach. Further instructions will be provided on race day.
  • No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed.
  • Runners must wear race numbers at all times on the course. Race bib should be facing forward.
  • No individual support vehicles or escort runners are allowed.  This is an INDIVIDUAL endurance event.  Team work which provides you with an advantage over another competitor is not allowed.  Aid station provided.
  • Runners are expected to follow directions and instructions of race officials.
  • The course will completely close four (4) hours after the start of the race.  Any athletes still on the course after this time will be required to withdraw from the race.

The Transition Zone

  • Only athletes participating in the triathlon will be allowed in the transition zone.  All spectators are asked to stay outside of the transition zone.
  • Transition from swim to bike requires running up an incline grassy hill.
  • TEAMS will require the swimmer to run up the hill to the transition zone where the biker will be waiting with their bike on the rack.  Once a tag has been made, the biker may proceed to take the bike off the rack, walk or run the bike out of transition and mount the bike to start the bike portion.  After the biker has completed the bike route, will dismount and replace the bike on the rack, at which time s/he may tag the runner and the runner may begin the run.

 

TRY-A-TRI RACE RULES

The Try-a-tri will start at 8:00 a.m. All of the rules as stated above for the sprint
triathlon will apply. The only difference is the course distance. Please read the
rules.

The Swim is a one lap swim of ~ 375m starting at Gillies Lake Beach.

After the swim exit, run up the grassy hill to the swim to bike transition.

The Bike Course is ~ 10 km in length. It is the same as the Sprint Distance course
except the turn-around is on the back road just before (ie. west of) Delnite
Road.

The Run course starts just like the Sprint Run course however there is only one
loop (again in a counter-clockwise direction) around Gillies Lake.

KIDS TRIATHLON RULES

The KIDS Swim:

The kids swim will start at 12:00pm. It will consist of 1 lap around the Gillies Lake
beach deep end swim area. Lifeguards will be available. Children 7-10 may use
flotation assists. Wetsuits are allowed for all participants. Flippers and/or other
propulsion assists are not allowed.

Children ages 11-14 will start in the first wave. A few minutes later, the children 7-
10 will go in a second wave.  This will decrease congestion on the swim. (Timing will take this into account).

Transition:

Upon exiting the water, kids will run up the grassy hill and go to the transition area at the Lakeshore road cul-de-sac.

KIDS TRIATHLON Bike Course

The bike course will be once around the Gillies Lake trail in a counter-clockwise
direction. Upon leaving the Transition area, participants will head down
Lakeshore, descend the hill and continue onto the trail. There will be no use of
the boardwalk.

KIDS TRIATHLON Run Course

The kids will run and/or walk from transition out to Toke. Right on Toke to Howard.
Merge Right on Howard and take second path on right back to Gillies Lake trail.
Go right on the trail and run counter-clockwise back to the Finish at the Gillies
Lake Beach.

 

AID STATIONS

  • There will be aid stations on all run courses.  Fluids will be available.  If you require further fluid or food needs, please ensure to carry them with you when racing. 
  • First aid and lifeguards will be available during the swim and at the Transition area.  Do not hesitate to ask for medical assistance if necessary.
  • Food and beverage will be provided post-race for recovery.
